random pretty sunset

I’m sitting here getting my geek on, watching Dr. Who while I crochet some balls. My mom has become a huge fan of David Tennant in the past year or so, and when we were in Omaha over Christmas I watched a bunch of episodes of Dr. Who with her.

I remember watching Tom Baker in the original series when I was a kid, but I’d never seen any of the modern series till recently. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it, although I shouldn’t have been. I’ve always been a sucker for all things British. And as I’ve demonstrated time and time again, I’m a geek. I can’t say I’m a die-hard Dr. Who fan; I have no idea what the Dr. Who equivalent of a Trekkie or Browncoat or an X-Phile is so I’m pretty sure I don’t qualify. But I like the actors and it’s a fun show with excellent writing and cheerfully cheesy special effects, which I sort of love. Best of all, all four seasons are available to view on Netflix Instant. That means there are hours and hours of new shows for me to watch while I crochet. Score!

Anyhoo. I was sitting here watching Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, when I suddenly remembered that today is National Delurking Day. I haven’t mentioned it on my blog before simply because I didn’t want to. But this year I want to. If you’re a regular reader of this blog but you rarely or never comment, today’s your chance to say hello. I’ll even make it easy for you by asking you a series of questions that you can choose to answer or ignore, as you like.

Do you consider yourself a geek? Why or why not? What geeky shows/movies/games/books do you love, and think that I should love too?

    Delurking!

I just recently stumbled upon your blog, and was thrilled to see someone LOVE Chuck as much as I do. Isn’t Agent (General) Casey the best?

And because I’m a geek, I Netflix’d Firefly just for Adam Baldwin. I’m making my husband watch it with me. He’s not enthused.

  2. Julia says:

Hi! I sometimes comment, but figured I’d say hi today anyways.

Yes, I’m a geek, but I don’t watch much TV. I’m a geek in the way that I love that classes started again this semester, I love organization and I love office supplies :) ha!

  3. Stephanie M says:

    Delurking!

I’m definitely a geek, but I think everyone has a different version, so I’m not sure you would love what I love. I haven’t seen Dr Who, and *gasp* also haven’t ever seen Chuck.

I’m here in So Cal too, and really enjoy watching for places I might know or like to visit in all your adventures with SAJ. I think i’m a little further north than you all, but I know I want to visit further south when I find time.

I hope you keep up your writing, I love hearing about the things you make and dream up, and the adventures you have with your daughter.

    Delurking…..
I have you in my Reader, so I read your every post. I don’t know if I have EVER commented before, probably not.
I am a homeschooling mom to a fun 5 year old girl. And I too love Chuck

  5. Katie says:

Delurkers unite! I guess just saying that makes me a geek, haha. I don’t think i’m a HUGE geek but I am kind of a dork. There’s a difference, right? Anyways, I love your blog and I think I’m going to have to start watching Chuck just so I can throw a Chuck-aganza sometime, lol.

  6. Jeannette says:

Delurking to say I want to paint pottery with you! Not a geek, more of a wallflower. Hence the not commenting. I have started watching Chuck and am trying to get the hubby to watch too.

  7. Stacie says:

    Hi Bethany!

I have commented before, but not all that often. I am usually way behind in my blog reading!

I am a total geek! Love Chuck, all types of crime shows (CSI, CSI: NY, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist). Shows I love that I think you would totally be into: How I Met Your Mother (Not totally geeky, but I absolutely love it!) and The Big Bang Theory (Don’t think that there is a geekier or funnier show out there!)

  8. SAJ says:

    lurk lurk lurk

I just like the way it sounds.

  9. Ruth says:

I’ll admit it–I’m a lurker. And I came over here from SAJ’s site, where I may or may not have also been a lurker. I try to comment every now and then to delurkify myself . . . maybe I should work on that . . .

Of course, I’m a geek. But I’m a geek for The Office. I’ve probably seen every episode at least three times, and I’m not ashamed to admit I’d watch them again in a hearbeat (which I do, often, on instant Netflix, at any given time of day). Geek geek geek!

  10. Jennifer says:

I’m a lurker for a VERY LONG time! Your blog was one of the 1st I started to follow. Annalie is the same age as my son (they were born just days apart!). I haven’t been following THAT long :) I don’t think I am a geek..though maybe I would have been considered that in high school. Now I’m just a mom doing what I love :)

  11. I don’t lurk, but I’ll say hello… Hello!

Yes, I consider myself a geek. Considering I studied Computer Science in college and now make my living doing web work… that’s pretty geeky!

I really like the TV show Fringe. Love the board game Balderdash. I have a soft spot in my heart for 80′s movies like Real Genius. And I’m completely enamored of Dr. Horrible. I think those all give me some geek cred!

  12. Emily says:

I can’t believe I have just spent an hour considering my geek qualifications. Now I can’t decide, does a true geek have to be a geek throughout or can you be a hybrid?

  13. Allyson/HBMomof2 says:

I’m a commenter, but not frequently, but I read every post. Fellow So Cal girl who first followed you on twitter and then found the blog. Your post about making your own vanilla is the one that put on the blog roll (which I had just figured out at the time) and is still bookmarked, maybe next Christmas. Geeky enough yet?

I am a geek, but not for Chuck. (SORRY!) Love geeky stuff that my husband likes, Flash Gordon, Star Wars, anything with aliens, The Green Lantern, Big Bang Theory, Sci-Fi movies, but I also like the geeky girly stuff too. I am a huge organizer, with labels in clear boxes, usually alphabetically. Clothes are hanging in sleeve length order by color, and I have a list of everything I own in my house…just in case. Love Glee (I’m a Gleek), reading books, and knowing that it is delurker day, but yours is the only site I answered. Yours was one of the first, so it’s justified. Love to all the geeks out there!

  14. LaurenC says:

You already know I lurk here…..
And you know my geek status.
    CHUCKedy chuck chuck!!!
And Glee……i’m turning into a gleek too.
In fact, I am watching episode 11 right now.

  15. cc says:

I’m taking Chuck fandom to new heights. I went into the local yogurt shop to get an application, they were out. I was wearing my Chuck shirt.

  16. Heather says:

regular reader… randomly landed here while looking for a homemade vanilla recipe and fell in love with your pictures and chat. am i a geek? hmmm? i think so.

  17. Sandy says:

Delurking to say that I also recently became a fan of the David Tennant Dr. Who. They are showing older seasons on the PBS channel in Chicago.

  18. Ellen says:

Delurking to say that I am a geek – and think that Chuck party looked awesome!

  19. Katrina says:

HI! I just wanted to know why you are crocheting balls? What fun project can I copy off of you now? hahaha

  20. jastereo says:

I never really considered myself a geek but then at some point I thought about the fact that building a computer for myself was no big deal, that I used to watch Star Trek TNG as I fell asleep most nights in high school or maybe that tearing something apart to fix it is my first inclination (rather than call someone)…I decided that puts me firmly in the geek camp.
Also, if you ever use the word delurk you are a total geek.

  21. jastereo says:

Sorry – just thought of this – and I think this sinches my geek status (though borders on true dorkitude). I just got a new 16gb flash drive and first thing I did was spend 45 min of my life figuring out which of my 5 types of removable flash media was the fastest (for upload and download). I know…so hot right!

  22. Ashley says:

That sunset is beautiful! We’re working on our 8th day of rain, no pretty sunsets for us.

  23. Lynn says:

Ok … enough of a geek in a lot of ways, but did NOT know what delurking was … but I think through context I have it figured out :) .. and I qualify!

I am a huge Star Trek (esp TNG and Vger) .. and LOVE the new movie.

For reading geekdom, if you like Sci-Fi/Fantasy at all … anything by Anne McCaffery is excellent .. especially Dragonriders of Pern.

Does M*A*S*H count toward geekdom? yes, STILL watching it!!
    love to you, Bethany!!!!!

  24. Madge says:

Not Delurking! Because I don’t lurk. I might be guilty of skulking or creeping, but NEVER lurking.

  25. Sort of a lurker.

Not a geek – electronically challenged! But I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Big Ban Theory and CIS (old and new and repeats!!!).

I’ve won a prize from you before and still hang it on my door –

    Your party looks amazing!

  26. Claire says:

Delurking to say hello from a rather snowy, cold and shivery Scotland :)

It took me until my thirties to realise it, but I’m a total geek. Just as well, cause a fellow geek proposed to me and we got married last year :D

I strongly recommend you read the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. Start with ‘The Eyre Affair’ It’s got everything – Bronte, time travel, gadgets, not to mention being able to jump into books! Fantastic fun for the inner geek in you!!

    C.

  27. Kim says:

I love love love love Dr Who. Sad that David Tennant’s run is up – I loved him as The Doctor – and probably as anything else :) (Though not so much in Harry Potter once I realized that was him. He gave me the heebiejeebies in that.) I just spent last weekend watching the entire first series again, after having just watched the end of David Tennant’s run. I LOVE that it’s all available to stream on Netflix! Good choice in the way you spend your time ;)

  28. BeachMama says:

Am a day late, but had to say that no, I don’t consider myself a geek… however… I do live with two of them and they really get geeked out some days, I leave it all to them :)

  29. Erin says:

I am a day late too, because that is when I get your RSS feeds.

Anyway – I am a geek in that I am slightly socially awkward. Maybe that makes me more of a nerd.

I love to read journal articles about magmas and carbonation of peridotites and zoning in plagioclase and olivine. I am not sure if I want you to also. I mean that would be fantastic if you & I could sit over coffee & talk about that kind of stuff, but I don’t see our friendship ever headed in that direction. And I perfectly happy with that. I miss my B & A & T (I had A & T in the other order but that sounded wrong.).

Perhaps today if National Rambling Day and I don’t know it.
PS When I graduate I am reading a long list of books starting with Cosmos. Have you read it?

  30. Fiona says:

Delurking (a day late as I read you through RSS)

I don’t think I’ve commented before (I did love the foil, sweetie wraper glitter sequin thingy you did, so maybe commented on that. I am a TV geek. X Files, Star Trek Next Generation, Star Trek Enterprise, Voyager, Stargate (all 3) CSI (until I had my daughter and the violence upset me too much) Heros. I love organisation and mainstream techy stuff and I seem to collect courses to study and patterns to knit… I found Chuck because of you THANK YOU! There are a few very good David Tenant episodes but I’m not a great fan of Dr Who. watch out for Blink (my FAVOURITE ever).

  31. Tiffany says:

    A day late…but here I am! ;)

  32. Rena says:

    Delurking a day late…

My hubster is a board game geek (there’s a website by that name, and he’s an active member of it). Our favorite board games right now are “Agricola”, “Dominion” and “Pandemic” but we also like the old standbys “Carcissone” and “Settlers of Catan”. We have board game nights with friends about 4 times a month. We also like “Wits and Wagers” – a fun party game you can find at Target.

I like to watch “The Office” (I own a t-shirt that says “Vance Refrigeration”). Battlestar Gallactica Season 2 is in my Netflix queue. I sometimes catch episodes of “Glee” and love it.

I’m a rock climber – both indoors and out. I can comfortably scend a 5.10 in a gym, 5.8 outdoors; I like to belay with an air traffic controller, not a grigri; the secret to my success is edging and smearing, and I’ve got plenty of quickdraws in my trad rack.

I like to read journals about peridotites too. Maybe I should have coffee with Erin.

    Geek!

  33. Angella says:

Working has seriously cut into my Internet time, but HI!!

    Miss you. :)

  34. Kassie says:

I’m more of a loiterer than a lurker. But I’m most certainly a nerd. And I’ve said it before so I’ll say it again, you really need to watch Buffy.

  35. Julie says:

    Delurking also…
I’ve been reading your blog via SAJ, to which I also lurk. We were pregnant at the same time and I have a little guy just a month older than Bug.

I’m a Band Geek – have been since high school. Pep band in college and grad school – and couldn’t give it up – so at 38, I’m still playing with the St. Louis University Pep Band. I do watch a show that I think you’d like though – it’s called That’s Clever on HGTV. It’s a geeky crafty show.

  36. lori says:

    Better late than never…

I am a geek in so many ways and at this time of my life I am proud of it. My husband (who is the IT guy at a college) can’t believe that people at my small office come to me with computer questions, but I love it.

I’m glad that you gave the newer Dr. Who a chance. I never got into the older series, but love the new ones.

Thanks for reminding me that Chuck was back on. You should sell the Chuck shirts. I would buy one!

  37. Erin says:

Rena, I’d play any of those board games with you anytime (after I graduate). I just played Settlers of Catan on Christmas and loved it.

Ah well, next time I’m in Denver.

  38. Estrella says:

Delurking although I may have commented once or twice before :)

I am totally a geek about music and quirky socks. In terms of shows, I also love The Office. My new husband is the food geek, and thanks to him, I’m now enjoying shows like “Iron Chef,” “Glutton for Punishment,” “Three Sheets,” and “Good Eats.”
