Annalie Turnblad
January 9th, 2008
My mom and I took Annalie with us to see Hairspray at the theater a few months ago, and she loved the upbeat dancing and music, though she got bored with the story quickly. I got the soundtrack, and after we listened to it once in the minivan on our road trip to Omaha last summer, I decided that maybe I didn’t want my 3.5-year-old listening to some of the lyrics again and again lest she ask me to explain what “the flasher who lives next door” is or start talking about “Negro Day” (the movie is partially about civil rights in the early 60s). I decided we’d just take that one out of the CD player when Annalie was in the van.
Except Annalie LOVED the soundtrack and started asking for it by name. She especially enjoyed the big opening number that Tracy Turnblad sings, “Good Morning Baltimore”. Here is her rendition!

Totally cute! Isn’t it amazing what they remember after only one exposure? Ross caught a bit of Monty Python’s Holy Grail when he was four. We found him in the hall after bedtime, given away by his uproarious laughter. To this day, he’ll occasionally offer up, “FFFFWHUMP! - I’ve cut your arm off! - No, you haven’t,” and then fall into giggles. He’s seen the whole movie a couple of times but that scene - the first he saw - remains his favorite.

She really is a neat little girl. You guys should come visit sometime :)
Yes we should! We loved British Columbia on our one and only visit there, but we have dear friends in Oregon so you never know, we might just show up for a visit one day!

Wow. She is *hella* cute. I especially like the snow video and her singing about growing bigger everyday. You know, Hairspray is not the worst movie you could have taken her to. At least it wasn’t a scary horror flick or anything.

Hee hee, it doesn’t take much effort to mishear that as “Good morning, Voldemort”! ;-)
Hahaha! Sarah, you’re right! :-)

VALTIMORE! I swear I’m not going to be able to see that movie or hear that song again without thinking of Annalie’s VALTIMORE.
sweetness.
ooooh playdough!
Also, I’ve tried to tell Annalie that the line is, “It’s like a message from high above,” but she remains convinced that the message is from “high a-bowl.” Cracks me up every time.

I liked the morning talk about Gumball and friends, too :)
You could always make a special “Annalie Mix” cd that has the songs that are ok for her, plus maybe some others that she likes on it :)

You should totally come to Oregon (from the comment above!)
My mom let me see Dirty Dancing at 8 or something, and it only took me ONCE to memorize the entire movie.
My grandparents were horrified. I’m still angry I don’t have any super high silver dancing shoes :)
