apple pie torture

March 3rd, 2009

Annalie was reluctant to try her broccoli at dinner tonight—even though she loves broccoli—because it had a crumb topping. She did manage to choke down one bite, making a face as she chewed and washing it down with a big sip of pink milk.

“I am never ever trying that kind of broccoli again!” she declared.

“It’s okay if you don’t want to eat another piece tonight,” I said, “but next time we have it you can try at least one bite. Sometimes you have to try a food lots of times before you like it.”

“Well, I don’t think I’ll ever like that!” she replied with finality.

I switched tacks. “Annalie, do you like apple pie?”

“Yes, it’s yummy!”

“Well, did you know I used to not like apple pie?”

“You didn’t?!”

“No, I didn’t. I thought it smelled delicious and it looked good, but I didn’t like the way it tasted. Do you know how many times I had to try apple pie before I liked it?”

“How many times?”

“About a HUNDRED times.”

Annalie blinked, then turned to my mom and asked in awed tones, “Gramaw, you made her do that?”

  1. LOL – Great conversation!

I actually employ that same idea now, even as an adult. When I try something new, I tell myself I have to try it at least 4 or 5 different times before I make a definitive answer on whether I like it.

Well, unless I find something particularly offensive.

But I was too picky as a kid, I felt like I ruled out too many food items. I hated cheesecake as a kid simply because I didn’t know what it was and the thought of “cheese” and “cake” sounded wrong to me. I missed out on too much, I have to make up for it now!

Annalie could have her own sitcom. It would be hilarious!

    Hahahaha!
(Do you know the Broccoli song by Sandra Boynton? It’s excellent! Some of my favorite lines:
“How can you expect me to eat something that looks just like a tree?”
“When people come to dinner and it’s broccoli day, they say ‘Thank you, but we really must go!’”
The CD is called Dog Train and also contains one of the best songs, ever: the nap song. “I neeeeeed a nap, when all my strength is gone…” Priceless.)

Annalie, don’t believe her – you don’t ALWAYS learn to like it.

    Asparagus.
    Stewed carrots.
    Turnip greens.
    Monkey brains.
    Dirty sock sandwiches.

    Case in point.

This doesn’t actually have anything to do with your post – unless you count the fact that broccoli can be put on pottery! – but I just left this on Angella’s site and thought, hey! GO TO THE SOURCE. Therefore:

“Bethany’s pottery rules. I really need to get on ordering some of that action. My coffee needs to be prettier.”

Haha! I think it’s so awesome that Annalie’s mind made that jump. Most kids would just say “blech, I’m never going to try something A HUNDRED times!.” Or “wow, a hundred! That’s a lot of times!” but Annalie goes straight to “Gramaw, you made her do that?!” What an incredibly intelligent child! Good for you. And it took me years to like broccoli. I still don’t like cheesecake. Maybe I’ll give that 50 more times….

Haha! Your mother must have been horrible in her eyes! To MAKE you eat apple pie… sigh. :)

  10. Ha ha! That is too cute. I learned to like broccoli at a friend’s house. I was too polite to not eat it, so I choked it down and ended up eventually liking it!

Ha ha ha! And I’m guessing if you tried apple pie that many times, you must’ve really wanted to like it! Actually I can think of a few things that I wanted to like, but didn’t really, so I just acquired the taste.. isn’t that weird how that works… It was kind of like that with coffee for me, all the cool people drink it, so I wanted to drink it too…

  12. Love this!! Too funny!!

I hope she associates brocolli with apple pie now! :)

  13. How cute! nice tactic to get your daughter to eat broccoli. I have to do it with my kids. Sometimes I give up (I know I shouldn’t) –
