Birdseed cookies
February 7th, 2008
Over a month ago, I mentioned towards the end of this post that Annalie and I were making birdseed cookies, and I got a couple of requests for the recipe. I bet you thought I forgot about that, right?
I didn’t forget; I’m just slow. The recipe I used was very similar to this one, except I used peanut butter in place of some of the butter, and I threw in some dried cranberries for color. I think there was oatmeal in there too.
We baked the cookies right after Christmas, and I knew I wouldn’t have the chance to string them right away, so I packed them in containers and stuck them in the freezer. We finally got them out the other day and finished making the feeders, stringing the cookies on lengths of green twine and then hanging them above the birdfeeder on our deck and in a tree in our front yard.
I don’t know if the birds liked them or not. I never saw any birds eating from them. The cookies in the backyard were gone the next morning; we’re assuming a squirrel or raccoon got those.
It poured rain a day or two after that, and all the cookies in the front yard ended up as soggy crumbs on the mulch below, which then disappeared by the following morning. So maybe the birds ate the crumbs, or maybe a squirrel got those too.
Well, at least they were nice to look at. If you try making them, let me know how it goes, will you?

Cookies for birds? When I first saw the picture I thought they looked tasty… but I don’t really want to eat birdseed. :-)
If I made those and put them out, the pigeons would come flocking even more than they already do. Yuck… flying rats. Those are the only birds I ever see in the city here.
I love the idea! Now tomorrow or this weekend I’ll have to make some. Thanks for feeding the Squirrels!!
Those are GREAT!
I think I might have to try it.
1. I think we will have to make those, though the birds will probably hate me because it’ll mean dealing with the cats.
2. If you haven’t already been awarded it by someone else, and even if they have, I’m going to give it you anyways.
You are Caught Being Good.
What a great idea! I’ll have to do this with the kids :)
How crafty! I love the idea! I’m sure the squirrels were happy to!
That’s a neat idea, I would be afraid of attracting the rabbits more than I need to around here though. Either that or my dogs would eat them ;).
I will definitely have to try making those with my son. Whether the birds, squirrels, rabbits or whatever eat them they can all use a good meal during this cold winter.
p.s. I love the bandaid. There is no reason that adults should have to wear boring bandaids when there are so many fun ones out there. :)
I’ve always been a fan of fun bandages. :-)
Thanks Bethany! My roomie and I will have to try this out.
This reminds me of when we would smear pine cones with peanut butter and roll them in birdseed, then we’d hang them in the yard. I love attracting birds AND squirrels. Kudos to you for being appreciative of God’s creatures…and teaching Annalie the same. :)
Awesome. I can hear the crows in my backyard cawing with anticipation!
