Day 3 – Last-minute homemade gifts
December 24th, 2007
Yesterday Annalie and I went shopping for Annalie’s Christmas present for Troy. I suggested that we could get a craft kit and make him a frame or ornament. She liked that idea, but the shelves at our small-town craft store were pretty picked over. So we decided to make salt dough ornaments.
I didn’t want to make a ton of ornaments, so I quartered this recipe, and added some some blue gel food coloring at Annalie’s request. The dough was softer and tricker to roll out than the cinnamon dough, so I had to help Annalie quite a bit with that part. But once they were baked and cooled, Annalie brushed on some Mod Podge and sprinkled the glitter. Then she wandered off to play, and I added a second coat of Mod Podge and wrote her name on the back of each one. Once they dry, we’ll add some string and presto, homemade presents for Troy and some of her friends.
We also made dough for birdseed cookies today. They’re actually cookies for birds, and the fun part about making them is that you throw the eggs in whole, shells and all! I guess the calcium is good for the birds. Annalie thought that was hilarious, and loved throwing the eggs in the mixer to be crunched up. I’m thinking rolling them out and baking them tomorrow is going to be a good Christmas-afternoon, I’ve-opened-my-presents-and-played-for-fifteen-minutes-and-now-I’m-booooored remedy. I’ll keep you posted on how those turn out.
Merry Christmas Eve!

Your ornaments look great! We got a movie for the “I’m Booooooooooooored” moments but I’m thinking it’ll get watched later in the week. The weather’s scheduled to be quite nice and the Big Present this year is a real hockey net – something tells me we’ll wake up to joyous shrieks and will not see the children after we manage to get the net out of the living room into the yard. :)
P.S. Psychosis is the only explanation for why the net is in the house in the first place. Chris and I almost (but we’re too superstitious to actually do it) have bets on just how many windows will be broken by the time we wake up.
Oh that looks like it was fun for the both of you. I want to do crafts while the girls are out of school – planned them even, but dang…with all this sickness, not sure how close to doing it I’ll get. :(
Could you share the recipe for birdseed cookies?? That sounds like a neat idea.
