Day 5 – a leopard can’t change her spots
September 27th, 2012
Oh, COME ON. You all knew I was going to involve dottery in today’s spots-themed photo somehow. I paint dottery. That’s what I do!
Sherry, Bex‘s mom, had asked me to paint a Firefly-quotes mug for her ages ago and I hadn’t been able to find the right kind of mug at the studios in DC where I painted. Today when I walked into my favorite San Diego pottery studio, they had exactly the kind of mug I needed, and I was reminded exactly why it’s my favorite studio. I painted a second mug just because.

I want to visit you *just* to see that studio. And, you know, visit you as well. ;)
YAY, Mom’s going to be stoked :) & I’m with Jen on this one — one day we will all paint pottery with you at your favorite studio :D
I love your dottery art! I tried it out at a paint your own pottery store here in North Carolina, and I had a really hard time trying to make the dots with a brush. Is there a special tool you use to make the dots? Thank you! :o)
Excellent question. :-) I use the wrong end of the paintbrush! It’s that simple. Here’s a post I wrote all about it:

Thanks for the tutorial link! I can’t wait to try it! At the studio I went to, I did not like the way it was finished. It was as if there wasn’t enough clear glaze over it so it wasn’t very shiny. That studio is closed now, any advice on finding a good studio? And I’m guessing you are using enamel paint, not acrylic. I don’t think pottery painting is as popular in North Carolina.
Katie, I tried replying directly to your email, but the email was rejected. Are you maybe using an old email address to leave comments?
Anyway, you’re welcome for the link. The kind of pottery-painting I do uses glazes, and then it’s fired in a kiln. That’s why it looks so different when it’s first painted from when it’s finished.
There are actually quite a few studios in North Carolina, according to this list, depending on where you are. Good luck!
Looks like I typed my email wrong on the first post, which was then saved and used the second time! Whoops!
It turns out there is one fairly near me that I will have to try. Thanks for the link and all the info! :o)
