Day 5 - Brown-bag popcorn!

December 26th, 2007

Did you know you can make popcorn in a brown paper bag in the microwave? It sounds crazy, but it’s true! Here’s how I do it: I put one-quarter cup of popcorn kernels into a brown paper bag. I just fold the top over tightly a few times to close it, though you could probably stick a piece of tape on there if you’re worried about it popping open.

Would you believe...

Then I stick it in the microwave and set the cook time for two minutes.

(This one is my 7 days photo, by the way.)

Usually I take the popcorn out before the full two minutes is up, around 1:45 or whenever the popping slows down to more than 1-2 seconds between pops.

Then I dump it into a bowl, pour a little melted butter on if I’m feeling decadent, and sprinkle it with some garlic powder (my popcorn seasoning of choice). Yum!

Impressive. I’ll try this. Maybe I’ll even post my success story to 7 days, just to copy ~you~ ;)

Loving your 7Days contributions, by the way.

Hmmm. . . maybe I will not buy that Whirly Pop after all! Thanks for the great tip - this looks a lot better than the other microwave alternative.

I have tried this many many times, and it has never worked for me. I was hoping you were going to say something about putting oil in the bag with the seeds, but no you do it just like I have tried. I guess it will still be airpopped for me :).

    LOVE IT!!!

We actually saw this on Good Eats several years ago and had to try it. It works great! We do occasionally put in some popping oil, or olive oil with it (just a drizzle) and maybe some salt before popping. And, we tape it closed sometimes, and sometimes we actually use staples! (yes, we do…no sparks, no burning…Truly!)

    Yum…I want some now….

Wow - I never knew that one could do such a thing. Thanks for opening my eyes - because I have a big bag of popcorn just sitting in the pantry.

    This. is. cool.

Sounds great! I’m going to have to give it a try! Prepackaged microwave popcorn is not so healthy for you.

    This is GREAT!

Is there anything you CAN’T do? Seriously?

What a cool idea!! And I could actually do this one!! Most of your mad cooking skillz way are out of my league. I loved the post about the recipe from your grandmother-in-law, but… well, let’s just say that I’m impressed that you can do it! You rock!

I’ve always wondered what makes microwaveable popcorn… microwaveable, ha! I will def. have to try this, especially since you know, microwaveable popcorn apparently gives people lung cancer or whatever joyful thing they are saying now!

As a tip, I recently found a shaker-container of Kraft’s powdered cheddar cheese…the same stuff as in the box of Mac-n-Cheese. We’ve been sprinkling it on our popcorn since & it tastes better than the popcorn you get in those big tins…fresher. I found the powder near the spices section and again near the popcorn. Guess they’re not sure where to ‘classify’ it yet - kinda like the dried onions for the Green Bean casserole. Mystery products…gotta love ‘em.
