dottery class: embrace your inner imperfectionist
July 3rd, 2010
When I taught that dottery class last weekend, I realized something: dottery is all about letting go of any tendencies to perfectionism and just winging it. I call it “eyeballing it.”
I only spent about five minutes explaining and demonstrating my dottery technique. The rest of the class I alternated between painting my plate, answering questions, and encouraging my students to just go with the flow of their dotting and not worry about little mistakes. And of course laughing, because we had a lot of fun! They all produced such beautiful and unique pieces, see?
Thanks for making the class so fun, ladies! And thank you, Anna, for inviting me to teach! Anytime you want me to teach another class, you just let me know.
p.s. New banner! Gracias, B!

I had an amazing time and dottery is growing on me :) Thank you so much for teaching the class and I am very happy that you enjoyed yourself as much as I did!
Ha. Ha ha. I HAVE no inner imperfectionist. Which is perhaps more reason than ever to try things like this… =)
Wow, such lovely stuff! I feel we need an online dottery tutorial, Bethany! :)
oooh, I love the bowl with the green and maroon colours. I still doubt I could do all the dots so evenly like that but, they sure are pretty.
The hardest part must be keeping your fingers out of it once you get toward the finish! Pretty cool technique though!
Love the new banner! Whenever I see one of those doll things – can’t remember what they’re called – it reminds me of you.
Great job on the dottery class!!! Those pieces look awesome!
I want to do dottery again! Love the new banner, too.
so fabulous that you taught the class! now, when is the book coming out? i want to see dottery on t-shirts, birthday cakes, bedroom walls…all things dottery! i adore the technique, and had never seen it before your work. :)
I wish I could have taken your dottery class! I keep thinking I need to go try painting pottery. (In fact, perhaps it would be good for me… I keep needing to break away from my perfectionism tendencies!)
Hi! I like youe work a lot. Can you please tell me if Does bowl with the green and maroon colours has dots inside too? Thanks!
This looks like so much fun! You’re so talented. It’s not often that someone can teach a technique in FIVE minutes. And I should know! Maybe I just have a problem with perfectionist tendencies. :o)
Now I’m in the mood to paint some pottery. Wonder if Nathan would be fuss free long enough for me to try some dottery? Last time he wasn’t. I didn’t get to paint what I wanted. Hmmm… just had a thought. Maybe I could have gone back at another time to finish I should have asked. Duh!
