Homemade vanilla milk
October 13th, 2008
When we go to Starbucks, Annalie always gets one of the single-serving boxes of Horizon Organic Vanilla Milk. She loves it. Today she requested vanilla milk when we were not at Starbucks so I made up my own recipe.
It was easy to make. I filled a medium-sized cup with nonfat milk, maybe 8-10 ounces, and added a scant 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and a slightly heaping 1/2 teaspoon of granulated sugar. (Note that this homemade vanilla milk has very little sugar in it, just enough to make it a little sweet.) I stirred it up and handed it to Annalie for the taste-test. What did she think?
“Mmmm! I just LOVE vanilla milk.”
Score one for Mom!

Yay YOU! Great idea!
Though I am not surprised…
Yay Mom!
I currently drink 1% milk, and I’m finding making the move to skim hard (well, I haven’t tried skim milk in years) so what’s the secret? Did you always drink skim or did you gradually switch to it?
Yum! I do that all the time for myself, only without the sugar. I also add a bit of vanilla to the cream for my coffee sometimes, if I’m feeling particularly indulgent. Vanilla makes so many things better!
I just had some vanilla rice milk with my cereal. Sounds a lot more boring than it was!
Oh, we do this kind of thing all the time. As a matter of fact I love vanilla lattes, or even black coffee with vanilla syrup. Sooo . . .
4 cups of water
4.5 cups of sugar (we go organic, unrefined)
heat until sugar melts
boil for 10 minutes – stirring occasionally
remove from heat, let cool
once cool add 3 tablespoons of vanilla
We use this in milk and coffee and sometimes tea. It could be used in just about anything. If you make it let me know how you like it.
My mom used to make us vanilla milk…it’s the only way I would drink it!! Annalie is so cute in that picture.
I make this for myself often, but warm it up in a mug. It’s a nice evening treat when I don’t want caffiene or chocolate. Helps with heartburn and supposedly helps you get to sleep better.
Perfect! I love the Chai Latees, but then I started buying the mix for home. Less calories, and I can have it anytime I want. Then I switched to London Fog (Steamed Milk, Earl Grey tea and Vanilla) again, I started making them at home. So I went back to good old Latees. Yes, I can make it at home, but it takes forever to heat up the steamer ;).
My oldest daughter makes that herself a lot, sometimes cold, sometimes hot, both are yummy!
Now, if you could mimic the white chocolate mocha, I’d really be interested!!! :)
Thanks! :)
Oh yum! I will have to try this!
i lived in germany when i was around 4…our neighbor was my best friend and we’d go to her german grandmother’s house after school. she’d make us either vanilla milk or she’d add a mushed banana with nutella toast. yum! i’ll have to make some up just to bring back memories!
Nice! My daughter loves the “milk boxes” but it gets a bit pricey. Thanks for the alternative.
