ladybug picnic for a birthday princess
April 9th, 2009
Remember last weekend when we were visiting our friends up in the high desert? The reason we went was because we were invited to Anna’s 3rd birthday party!
Christian and Anna are two of Annalie’s playgroup friends from Maryland (their family just happened to move to another part of California a few months before we moved here) so we always love seeing them. Even though we were just at their house a few weeks ago, we couldn’t pass up the chance to go back and help celebrate a birthday.
This particular party was a princess party, so all the little girls came dressed in their best princess dresses. Anna’s dress was her flower girl dress from her aunt and uncle’s recent wedding. Annalie chose to wear the amazing Cinderella dress that CC sewed for Annalie’s 4th birthday last May. She got lots of compliments on it from the other moms!
There were boys at the party too, but they weren’t required to wear princess attire. It would have just gotten in the way when they were climbing trees anyway.
The princesses attending the party enjoyed getting the royal treatment from all the dads present, which included swing-pushing and wagon rides.
One of the older princesses even pulled the wagon around for a while!
All that wagon-pulling and makes a princess hungry! Hot dogs and fruit and of course cake were quickly devoured—in a delicate, princess-like way, of course.
The biggest hit of the party, though, wasn’t the wagon rides or the swing or even the cake. It was the ladybugs!
There were SO MANY ladybugs in the backyard during Anna’s birthday party. Is there such a thing as ladybug season? If so, I think the peak of it must have occurred that day. The kids were all hunting for them and finding three or four at a time.
Best party game ever.
Thanks for inviting us to your party, Anna! We had a great time.
This photo has nothing to do with the rest of the post, but it cracks me up so here it is. Annalie was playing with this toy guitar, just strumming it and singing a little tune, when she suddenly ran across the room, slid on her knees, and said, “Oh yeah!”
You can see more photos from the party in the photoset Anna’s 3rd Birthday Princess Party on Flickr.

Princess parties are the best. Lucky for me I happen to know a someone or two that love all things girly.
I am still laughing from the last photo. Little rock star princess!
I love it!
That looks like it was a pretty stellar party. And the ladybugs? FUN!!!
I totally love where you put your watermark – it’s always flatteringly framing something :)
ps. That last photo? Love it. What a character!!
Love that last pic, sounds like something my crazy kid would do… :-) And a princess party, what a fun idea!
Such a beautiful party, I look forward to some Princess parties of my own in the years to come.
My two favorite photos are the Princesses being pulled in the wagon and Annalie rockin’ it out. Nothing like the perfect guitar ending.
The butterfly photos are wonderful.
I love Annalie’s dress, its beautiful.
Princess parties are awesome! When my niece had hers, I just couldn’t get enough pictures of all the princess dresses. CUTE!
The ladybug are a nice touch. Good going, mother nature!
Great photos. Annalie just gets more and more gorgeous. And you? Wow, I love your family photo; you guys are gorgeous. It’s been a while since I’ve been by, missed ya.
I have always wanted to buy ladybugs to release them in my yard. There used to be a business where I lived that did that… I should look it up.
Easter blessings, Bethany.
For some reason, among all the pretty ladybirds and princesses what really caught my eye was the hot dog. I’m now craving hot dogs at 10.10pm.
Love the pic of Annalie being a rockstar! She is too cute!
Happy Easter to you & your family!
Annalie was born to be a punk rock star. You can see it in her rock-slide stance! I solemnly swear not to dye her hair pink.
I honestly think there *just may be* a “ladybug season” — every few years, they’re around this area in a ridiculous abundance. Mom and I had to vacuum the poor little things off of the windowsills at my Papaw & Granny’s old house, when Granny couldn’t make it up the stairs to clean anymore. I mean — hand fulls on the windowsill, after the course of a *week!*
