Greetings from the Land of Enchantment!

We left San Diego Saturday night, after spending the day cleaning and running errands (thanks a million for the help, B!) and then a late dinner. We drove just across the California-Arizona border and stayed the night in Yuma. Sunday we drove across Arizona, the southern end of New Mexico (Land of Enchantment) and West Texas, so the view was similar to this for most of the day. At one point Annalie exclaimed, I’m so tired of seeing nothing but land…I wanna see BUILDINGS!”

Troy Boy

Our intrepid driver. I always offer to drive anytime Troy gets tired or just sick of driving, but he does 98% of the driving on all road trips. He just likes to drive.

Gramaw & Annalie

My mom and Annalie and a bunch of tchotchkes for sale at a gas station somewhere in Arizona.

colored pencils

She used her new colored pencils to draw the cactus in her new moleskine, both of which were part of a very cool art kit that Sonja made as a going-away road-trip present. I made Annalie wait till the trip to use the kit, and she was so excited when she finally got to use it.

coffee cozies!

After I twittered about losing the coffee-cup sleeve that I purchased from BeachMama a few years ago, Sonja and CC both gave me new cup sleeves. As you can see, they work perfectly. Thanks, amigas! (I turned the one on the right inside-out so it would be less-girly for Troy.)

Annalie laughing at Troy

Troy got in the backseat for some reason or other at a gas station and said, “I guess Gramaw’s driving now!” Annalie thought that was hilarious.

this photo sums up the whole road trip

This photo sums up the whole road trip so far. (No, not really…but it’s funny.)

beardface

Troy doesn’t get many chances to be lazy and let his beard grow, so he takes ‘em when he gets ‘em.

My girl. I love this photo.

What I do on roadtrips to stave off boredom.

what I do while we drive

As Troy drives, my mom reads and Annalie colors or writes in her workbooks, or they watch DVDs together (so far this trip we’ve been alternating between Avatar: The Last Airbender and Doctor Who). I’ve mostly been crocheting. This is only a sample of what I’ve made so far; in total I’ve made two potholders, four headbands, and half an Easter basket.

upside-down Katy

Katy is often out of her carrier as we drive. Lily tends to just curl up in her carrier and stay there till we stop moving.

We made it to Troy’s mom and stepdad’s house last night. We’ll spend a couple of days here visiting, and then we’ll hit the road again.

I love road trips… so much fun! I’m glad my package made it to your place in time. :)
(Though… are we done with this game now? When are you coming home?!) ;)

  4. Amanda says:

The weather looks like it has been perfect for you…I only hope some of the snow it gone by the time you make it to DC.
Love the headbands…how can I get one?! :)

  5. Jen Wilson says:

Glad you made it that far safely!! I love your photos, as usual :)

  6. SAJ says:

  8. Katrina says:

Glad to read things are going smoothly!! Hope it continues!

A beard does something for Troy. I like it!

I also like how you turned the pink-y sleeve thing inside out for Troy to make it less girly (you know – instead of giving him the bronw/orange/blue one.) Hehehe! Safe travels the rest of the way!

  10. Ruth says:

Wow! I’m not much of a long-car-ride lover, but this looks so fun! And I just have to ask–is it hard travelling with cats??

  11. mike says:

Looks like Troy’s got some arctic blonde in his beard!

Also, love the heat sleeves. Very posh.

  12. Heather says:

The beard growing reminds me of my childhood. My dad was in the airforce and until he retired the only time I saw him with stubble/a beard was when we were road tripping from one duty assignment to another. Our longest? SC to Alaska by way of Florida to Michigan (to visit the Grandparents) Now there was a trip to remember. I hope your cross country is as memorable.

  13. Bekah says:

You are so cute in your crocheted headband!

  14. JenK says:

You guys have so much fun doing everything! I hope the rest of the trip goes as smoothly.

Also? Is it just me or do you expect the Cheshire Cat to appear at any moment in the photo of the night sky and the windmill? It’s probably just me.

    1) I noticed in some of the pics that Annalie is wearing earrings. How long has she had her ears pierced? My 5 yr old has been asking to get hers done. So far I’ve put her off til her 6th b-day in June, but I was just wondering how it went for you all.
    2) Traveling with cats, that must be interesting. How do they go potty?

Glad you are having a safe and fun trip!

I feel like we are driving along with you. Hubby does most of our driving now too, then at our destination I drive. Having never driven through New Mexico it looks so pretty, but I can see how it could get boring kinda like driving through Mantioba and Saskachewan.

I do have a new cozy for you along with a few other treats, but… you will have to let me know where you land because I knew you would be on the road before it got to you (Canada Post is so slow). So your package will be your welcome to DC/Eastern Shore package :)

I don’t envy your drive, but I do envy everyone’s ability to do stuff in the car. I get carsick and have never been able to read or do anything but listen to music and stare out the window. Makes for a LONG TREK across the country. How wonderful to get to spend so much time together, though. I always love that part.

  18. Aunt B says:

    I love the desert scenery.

  19. cc says:

I’m glad to see you guys again, even if it is only in a photo.

Tell Troy he looks great with a short beard. Kind of like Hugh Laurie on House.
