oh the stories I could tell if I weren’t so tired
January 6th, 2010
I suppose I should write something, anything, to get that broken-blog post off the top of the page. I’m too tired to write a proper chatty post all about how we’ve been spending our days, but I’ll post a few photos to give you the basic idea.
I mentioned that International 7 Days Meet-Up we had at my house on Saturday. That was lots of fun.
I made Lamingtons, which are an Australian treat composed of spongecake, chocolate and coconut. They are as delicious as they sound.
My mom’s sister, brother, and sister-in-law drove down Sunday afternoon for a short visit. We went up to Snail Mountain and admired the view.
After lunch at our favorite local Italian place, we walked around the little downtown a bit. I saw this funny sign in the window of a martial arts studio: FEAR NO MAN. Inquire Within.
Lauren and I visited this fantastic little yarn shop. Lauren tried to control her yarn lust.
My Aunt Kathy and Uncle Bill checked out a secondhand store while Annalie, my Aunt Julie and my mom relaxed at the children’s bookstore down the street.
Back at home, we had a Vegemite tasting. Oh yes we did. Lauren says the problem most Americans have with Vegemite is that they treat it like peanut butter, spreading it on too thick. So we buttered toast and spread the Vegemite thinly on that.
I’m here to tell you, Vegemite is pretty darn tasty. It’s salty and tangy and I’d really like to try it with some cheese. I’m actually quite interested in acquiring more Vegemite and attempting to make a cheesymite scroll.
It’s sort of a tradition for my mom to take us to dinner at Outback Steakhouse when she visits us. I thought Lauren would get a kick out of it, so we took her there and she was amused. The food was delicious as usual, which probably made the archaic Aussie slang on the menu seem slightly less offensive.
Annalie made some crazy faces for my mom while we were waiting for the food to come to the table. She’s a nut.
I’ll have to write more about the zoo and the Air & Space Museum and the International 7 Days Meet-Up 2 (now with more internationality!) later, because now I’m tired and am going to bed. Tomorrow is Lauren’s last full day here and we deliberately planned a day of nothing so we could sleep in and Lauren could organize and pack. If we’re feeling really crazy we might go to Joann’s to buy Lauren some more stitch markers to go with all the yarn she bought so she could knit socks and things.
Now how about I end this post with our Day 157 photo for Troy?

looks like you having so much fun, never a dull moment!
lamington squares are also a favourite treat in south africa. then again, we joke that australia is the 10th province (state) of south africa ‘cos there are so many south africans living in australia!
The cat photo cracked me up – bwahahahaha…”this lounging on the back deck has me exhausted – wonder if we can convince our master servant to put up some shade for us…”
After all…cats FEAR NO MAN!
The Lamingtons look DELICIOUS!
Of course Vegemite is tasty, it’s pure MSG (b/c yeast extract is basically MSG – - that’s what cued me in b/c it says yeast extract right on the front – - but most folks would NEVER know that’s MSG). I’d never heard of this product before, so I’m glad to know it’s out there. Be careful, though, especially if you have ANY health problems b/c this stuff reeks physiological havoc!! Love your blog by the way (even though I rarely comment). Your life just looks like a fairytale, so colorful and happy :)
Yea! You fixed your blog! :) Looks like you are having a wonderful time!!
I was so tired last night too. I went to bed before 1 a.m.! I need to remember to take more pictures when we get together. I’ll have to hand you my camera and let you document.
I’m curious to taste Vegemite as you did… When I worked in television one of our reporters brought back Vegemite after the Sydney Olympics and made everyone in the station taste it (part of her follow-up story). We all got these little plastic tasting spoons with a small blog on it and ate it like that way. By itself I found it pretty loathsome!
But the Lamingtons…. that could be an Australian epicurean adventure I could go for!
Wow what a busy time for you! When you go you go, go, go. I love the shots of yarn, you seem to have a wonderful yarn shop. We have a couple but I fear there are better ones out there. I hope today was restful enough for you guys and that you had a wonderful last day together.
Dangit I forgot to try vegemite! But then maybe it’s cause it was spread on gluten? lol
I love how everyone is taking a picture in that photo. :-D
The first time I was given vegemite to try it was spread thick on toast (gross!) but I’ve come to enjoy toast, butter and a thin layer of vegemite. My husband is from Australia so when he moved to America and his supply of vegemite ran out, he was happy to find it at Cost Plus World Market. I know they have them in SD too since we went to one when we were there about a year ago. We’ve made cheesymite scrolls at home before but they didn’t compare to the delicious ones we had fresh from the bakery when we were in Melbourne last month. That’s probably b/c we’re not really great bakers and I think the dough was too dry and we used low fat cheese…
Lamingtons looks very yummy!! can you give the recipe or atleast on how to make that tasty looking sweets:)
