pink is the new…uh, pink!

Annalie enthusiastically approves

Because I’m of “advanced maternal age” now (I’m 35), there have been a few more blood tests and things with this pregnancy than with Annalie. One of those tests was a 20-week ultrasound today. Annalie and Troy both were there too, which was a relief. Troy wasn’t sure if he’d be able to get an hour or two off work as they were in the middle of prepping for a last-minute presentation to some Navy bigwigs. At the last minute he called and said he was leaving work and he would meet us at the clinic. Whew! I’d have hated for him to miss it, since he probably won’t get to be at any other doctor’s appointments for this baby. We’ll be lucky if he makes it to the birth, with how busy this job is keeping him.

Anyway, we were all there to find out that this baby is a GIRL!

The other things that were checked with this ultrasound—the baby’s size, brain, stomach, heart, amniotic fluid, etc.—were all fine. Or as the cheerful doctor told us with his Italian accent, “Norrr-MAL, norrr-MAL, everything looks perfectly norrr-MAL. Good, good, good. What a good little baby she is!” He said everything looked so normal that I might not even need a 32-week ultrasound. And while it would be fun to see the baby again before she’s born, I can’t say I would mind losing one doctor’s appointment in those last couple of months. There will already be plenty of them to deal with.

Annalie has been petitioning us for a baby sister for years now. She was thrilled to hear that she’s finally getting one. She had several name suggestions ready—Daisy, Daffodil, Rose—which is three more names than Troy and I have thought of.

Annalie also pointed out to us that her baby sister would be able to wear her old clothes, but she was a little worried that she would have to share her toys. Once I assured her that she and the baby will be far enough apart in age that they probably won’t be much interested in the same toys at the same time, she was fully enthusiastic about a girl baby. “But still…” she mused, “maybe we can put a baby gate in front of my bedroom so my little sister can’t get in my room and break my stuff.”

So I guess we’ll continue to have lots of pink in our lives! Although really, Annalie’s favorite color until quite recently was blue. Now she goes back and forth between blue, purple, and pink. And although I have nothing against pink, Annalie was far more likely to be dressed in a variety of primary colors when she was a baby. Hmm. Maybe those early fashion choices I made for her are behind her love of crazy combinations of pattern and color today.

Maybe I should just dress this kid in head-to-toe pink!

  1. Congratulations! Another little girl! How fun!

PS Tell Annalie that our older son, Jacob, insisted on a baby gate in front of his bedroom door too when the twins were small. It worked great! :)

YAY! So happy to hear that all is well, and congrats on more pink!

  3. Sonja says:

Oh, I remember my ultrasound and how the technician squinted and frowned… I was so worried! Then she’s all “everything’s fine!” and I was too happy to be mad at her and her focused face.
Might I add Crysanthemum to the lovely selection of names Annalie has picked?! I love that book. :)

  4. Rachel says:

:-) Super duper happy for you!

  5. LaurenC says:

Oh Yay! A pink flavoured one.
Though blue would have been good too….but at least Annalie didn’t have to submit objections to the colour based on her previous petitions.

  6. LaurenC says:

Also. I just noticed the new banner.
    LOVE IT!!
SAJ strikes again….in the best way possible.

  7. Jen Wilson says:

    Oh YAY!!!

I’ve got some bad news for Annalie though. My 6-years-apart girls DO like some of the same toys and Liliana HAS broken a couple of Kaylie’s toys. BUT! For the first 2 1/2 years, Kaylie’s toys were safe.

Either way, I know Annalie will be an amazing big sister!!!

    Congrats on your baby girl!!

  8. Jen Wilson says:

Also, cute pink bow on the fetus in your banner!

  9. Annika says:

Yay, another girl! I grew up with a baby sister and it is AWESOME. You know, except for the fights. But now we get along famously!

  10. Candace says:

Congratulations on your new baby girl!! Woohoo!! :-) Annalie is going to be a FANTASTIC big sister!

  11. Madge says:

I’m tickled PINK :) So happy to hear that everything is good. I’m laughing at Annalie’s idea of using the baby gate. *I* use a baby gate sometimes to keep everyone away from MY STUFF!

  12. Sam says:

YAY! So happy for y’all. Of course…I’m partial to boys…but how sweet will it be for the new baby to wear Annalie’s little outfits? Most of all, thank God for a healthy little baby!

I was totally into my baby brother until he could get in my room. I have a distinct memory of shutting the door in his face and he couldn’t get in! What a mean sister I was! So a baby gate isn’t a bad idea…

  13. Kate says:

Congratulations! How exciting that Annalie is finally getting her baby sister. What a special relationship they will have.

  14. Rhi says:

  19. Kuky says:

Yay! Is it sort of weird that I like the name Petunia?

  20. mereteveian says:

Bethany, – I just don’t think I’ve told you how trilled I was to hear that you’re pregnant, even tough I’ve been meaning to for weeks… And now, – it’s a girl and all is well! I understand Annalie’s worries. Sometimes I even worry about my kids getting into my stuff. Soon the boy will ask for the car :-/ Maybe I should do as she mused: put a gate in front of the garage?

Pink is a lovely color :-)

  21. Diane Farr says:

Oh, Bethany, I am so happy for you!! Is that really your Annalie in the photo? She is adorable!! Clearly too much charisma and joie de vivre to stick her nose in a book hour after hour. LOL!

  22. JennyBean says:

Woohoo, I’m excited! Sweet Annalie, she’ll be a great big sis. :)

  23. Bex says:

So once again, congrats and SQUEEEE!

And also, my vote is for “Daisy” if we’re going with one of Annalie’s picks… you know. Favorite flower and all, I might be a little biased, but hey :D

  24. leslie says:

so great that everything is fine and yay for another girl:)having girls is nice!

  25. Mandy says:

So exciting! Little girls are the best. Congratulations to you and Troy and Annalie!

  26. Cc says:

SuperChic is very excited you are having a girl. She immediately asked me what her name was. I told her you hadn’t decided but that Annalie has some ideas. She likes Daisy.

If anything it’s a great name to use until you have a name. We called SuperChic Hope for the entire pregnancy. No one knew that it was her middle name and not her first, which was a secret.

  27. Kandi says:

Congrats Bethany! I’m so excited for your family.

  28. ~moe~ says:

YAY! Congratulations, Bethany, Troy and Annalie! :) Blessings on the rest of your pregnancy!

  29. DeeJay says:

So many girl babies lately! Love it!

  30. Mim says:

Congratulations Actually Family! I love the new blog header too.

I think Annalie and Daffodil or Annalie and Daisy or Annalie and Rose sound quite lovely ;) Perhaps as middle names?

I know Annalie will be an outstanding big sister.

  31. Steph says:

Ooh how exciting! It’s great that you’ll be able to use some of Annalie’s stuff again. The new header is very cute!

  32. mike says:

Congratulations again… I know, I can’t say that enough. You should be glad to not require a 32 week ultrasound. Frankly, that’s like playing with fire. Full bladder, some guy/girl pushing on your gel-smeared stomach? Recipe for disaster! :)

All the best in your second-half of your 40 weeks.

  33. Kassie says:

Woohoo! Girl power! So excited for you guys and can’t wait to meet her, Miss Rose Daffodil Daisy Zinnia Gladiola Actually!

  34. Ashley says:

Yay for Girls! And boys too if that’s what you have, but yay for girls! We’re a house with 2 little girls and it’s awesome! So glad to hear everything went well for you guys

  35. bonnie says:

    *squeee!!!*

Congrats, Bethany and family! I’m so stinkin’ excited for you!

  36. Carrie says:

That’s so exciting! Yay for little girls! I’ve been wondering if you would update us.

Isn’t it fun (not!) to be of advanced maternal age? So many more appointnments! But at least all the ultrasounds are kind of nice (until the baby is so big you can’t see anything but the top of their head).

  37. Amanda says:

    Congratulations! Another girl! How sweet!

  38. Carol Sandretto-Unsinger says:

Awe! Congrats to you & your family – very exciting times for you!! Annalie will be a great big sister because this will be her baby… :)

(I had my last baby at 38 and I know all about the “advanced maternal age” issue – they might as well announce it via loudspeaker at each appointment and blare a horn or two, lol!)

  39. Rena says:

    How wonderful!

  40. karen says:

A girl! I don’t have a girl and am probably never going to get one of my own. Maybe sometime I can borrow one or both of yours? :)

  41. Shanee says:

Congrats!! But yes, the baby will want to play with A’s toys. LOL. When our 2 play it is a lovely mix of Playschool and barbies. So sweet. And if you want them to match(I have a thing for matching!LOL), I’ve found H&M to be a good place to get things in both sizes that are the same. ;) Congrats again!

  42. jen says:

I guess i havent read in a while….CONGRATS on the pregnancy and CONGRATS on the wonderful news of having another little girl. Much love to your family!!

  43. Ashley says:

Congrats, Congrats, Congrats!! Another girl, i wonder if she will look like a mini Annalie? That would be adorable. I think Rose is a nice flower name, or maybe…Lily?

  44. elz says:

Congratulations and glad things are going well. Sisters are the BEST. Also, all those clothes and toys you have-double duty. I get years of wear out of the clothes I buy (my girls are less than 2 years apart).

  45. Alexandra says:

Congratulations! I enjoy hearing of you wonderful family adventures and look forward to watching Annalie and her sister grow up together. My girls are 3 years apart and are great friends (most of the time)!

  46. Lauren H says:

hooray for another little girl! i have two younger sisters, so i know Annalie will have lots of fun growing up with the new arrival :)

  47. BeachMama says:

Woot! Woot!! Congratulations on another girl!! How exciting and thrilling for you all. And tell Annalie that no matter what her baby sister playing with her toys only means that she wants to be just like her.
