Guess what we did today. The title of this post is a hint. Here’s another one:

Signing her name

Did you guess? Annalie got her very first library card! When we walked into the library this afternoon, they had a sign up about a special red “First Library Card” that kids could get. And a little light went on in my head as I realized, Annalie could get her own card! How fun!

Signature

When I was a kid, you were allowed to get your own library card when you could sign your name. I remember getting my first card when I was in preschool, and how excited I was. Annalie has been able to write her own first name for a few months now, so I figured she was eligible. As it turned out, our library system doesn’t have that requirement—as long as a parent will sign, a child can get a card—but I had Annalie sign her name anyway. It seemed more special and official that way.

Story time with Gramaw

Like most kids, Annalie loves to be read to. She hasn’t started reading herself yet, but when she goes to bed at night, she likes to have a stack of 15 or 20 books next to her bed, so she can look at them by the light of her Glo-Worm. She goes through each book slowly, studying every page. She’s probably just looking at the pictures, but she has practically memorized many of her books. Maybe she’s looking at those 26 little symbols and remembering the story. Someday those two things will magically mesh and she’ll see words on the page.

First Library Card!

Till then, I’ll do my part. I’ll keep reading to her, and take her to the library.

She can even rack up her own over-due book fees now!

Yeah, she’s been sponging off us long enough! ;-)

Tee Hee. I just spotted your latest banner – too cute!
I love those pictures, they are adorable. The last one makes me want to squeeze her cheeks ;)

We love the library. Felix has a card too! :) We go quite often and sometimes we get the same books over and over again (there is only a small collection of books in English at our local library) but it is such a great resource. All those book – the possibilities!

    Have fun! :)

I thought you were going to say that she kept a stack of 15-20 books by the bed for YOU to read to her… you know…like MY kid does…

Last night I was so tired I begged her… BEGGED HER… to pick two SMALL books because mommy was exhausted. She finally put back the large, thick books and picked two of the small Dr. Seuss’ pocket books.

    Thing sing… that thing sings
Song long… the song was long
    Good-bye thing…. you sing too long…

Congrats to Annalie!! This is a huge milestone… you only get your first library card once!! We have yet to do that here… but once I find the library we will. I know… we’ve been here a year and still have no clue where the library is…

How much fun! Our boys were SO proud when they could write their names and get their own cards. I like Annalie’s lollipop “i”. :)

    Bethany,

I am so proud of you! What a good mom you are! As a teacher, it warms my heart to see parents involved in reading to their kids! This has a HUGE impact when they are reading in Kindergarten-2nd grade!!! I love how you made it a very special thing to Annalie. She will always remember that!!

  7. Angella says:

    Such a big girl!!

Graham brings home books from school, but I plan on taking the boys to the library this spring to get cards. Yay for reading!

  8. I like that you had her sign her own name. I worked at the local library throughout high school and the kids that got their first card as kind of a “rite of passage” or something, they seemed to treat the library with more respect.

I loved my library card with all my heart. It was like a key to a whole new world! I’m actually all goosebumpy about this entry.
    What? I’m pregnant. I’m allowed! ;)

We love the summer reading program at our local library. It’s an old fashioned building with the kids sections downstairs, separate from the adults. One summer we made a big calendar and the first things with listed were the events at the library. Our library has themed crafts, story time, and a great reading program with prizes weekly and when you meet your personal goal. The end prize is always a free book and usually coupons to restaurants and a discount day at the amusement park.

    Yay Annalie!

I remember getting my first library card – I was so excited and proud! I bet my mom still has it somewhere, too. I just remember, it was black with a gold lion on it :)

I still have my first library card, signed in my very careful and a little difficult to read little girl printing. It was the first spark in my passion for reading – hooray for Annalie! She’s started on a great adventure with books.

I’m not going to tell you how long ago it was that I got my first library card. Let’s just say…. it had a metal plate in it.

My kids had multiple library cards. My parents lived part-time in Kansas, so they had a library card to that small town library.

When we’d go to the beach, I would tell my youngest daughter, who is now 23, that she could get a library card from Cannon Beach! That was always our little joke.

    Yay for library cards!

  14. Erin says:

Congratulations, Annalie! You are such a responsible young girl!
    Love, Auntie Erin

When I got my Monmouth City Library card, I was so excited. They have a Klickitat Street sign inside, and it was then I learned that I live in the same neck of the woods as Ramona Quimby, one of my favorite childhood characters.

Well, if THAT isn’t the cutest!

  17. michelle says:

How thrilling!! I *love* the library! Yay.

That is so great! It warms my heart to hear about kids who like and WANT to read. I knew a couple kids whom I would give books to and their mom told me after a couple gift giving moments that her “kids had enough books, they don’t need anymore.” Kids always need books! YAY Annalie!

  19. Elaine says:

Lily got hers a couple months ago. It’s so cute to see her present her little card and pick out her books and all that! Happy reading!

  20. Jummy says:

How exciting! I love to read and that was one of the first things that my parents, especially my dad, made sure his kids had when we moved to a new place: a library card. I remember very regular summer trips to the library to pick up books.

Since I’ve lived in the same city for 18 years now it’s cute that one of the librarians still remembers the 11 year old me who would always borrow the maximum number of books!

I’m sure Annalie will be a book lover for life!
