the girl’s got a style all her own
August 26th, 2008
Annalie was digging around in the sparkly pink Caboodles case we use to store the costume jewelry and hair clips she never wears. I idly asked her what she was looking for. “Barrettes,” she answered, handing me a handful. “Can you put all these in my hair for me?”
“Sure,” I said. “You want all of them in your hair?”
“Yes, please.” She rummaged around some more in the case and produced more barrettes. “Oh, and I have to put this one in too, and this one…oh, and this one, of course.”
I gave Annalie’s hair a quick combing and started clipping. We had our usual hairstyling conversation: I remarked that it would go much faster if she would just sit still for two seconds, she responded with her standard but-I-only-wanted-to comeback. Traditions are nice, aren’t they?
The barrettes stayed in her hair for an hour or so, which was 55 minutes longer than I’d expected. I had left Annalie upstairs coloring while I unloaded the dishwasher downstairs, and when I came back upstairs she had moved on to putting various stuffed animals in a toy grocery cart, and there was a neat, colorful pile of discarded barrettes on the cedar chest.
I wish she’d let me put clips in her hair for real occasionally.

What an awesome style! This could actually start a new trend!
I’m glad that you encourage her creativity in hairstyle and clothing choices. It’s great to see what she comes up with!
Who knows, maybe one day she’ll want you to do her hair for real. Baby steps, baby steps :-) The barrette thing is a good sign.
That’s fantastic! You know what’s next? She’ll want you to put them all in YOUR hair. I’d love to see photos of that!
That’s a great style. I should adopt it for my long runs to keep my hair back. It’s too short for a ponytail and I’ve just been using a hat. Not nearly as creative! Annalie’s a genius… :-)
You did a good job with those barrettes! I love Annalie’s expression in the first and third pictures especially.
Um, I wear these same barrettes. So, of course I think the girl has fantastic taste ;)
Wearing all those barettes for an hour sort of makes up for not leaving them in before, doesn’t it?
Well, ok. So it really doesn’t. At least it’s socially acceptable to try to put barettes in her hair, unlike doing the same with my child. ;)
Can she come and chat with Emily? The girl needs to wear barrettes more often.
Annalie looks adorable :)
I honestly didn’t know they still made the plastic bars with little animals molded in! What memories! Please – if you really love her – don’t let her wear those past 1st grade? :)
I have a photo of you about this age with barrettes in your hair! I will have to go find it.. She is so much like you at times & so much not like you at other times! It is so fun to watch her grow into herself!
[...] Bethany, I just saw your post & it reminded me of a photo of you. This photo was dated Aug (!) 1978 and I wrote on the back [...]
