what’s in a name?
August 1st, 2010
Okay, Dana. I’ll bite. Because it’s a good idea for a blog post!
Now that we know this baby is a girl, Troy and I are just starting to talk names. We aren’t anywhere near choosing one, we just have a big list of all the names we sorta maybe like the sound of. At this point it still feels like we’ll never narrow it down to two names because none of them sound quite right when paired with Annalie, or our last name, or they mean something weird.
I commented on Facebook last night that coming up with a name for an innocent, brand-new human is HARD. Apparently this is a common sentiment. The comment thread quickly grew and got hilariously out of control, what with Sonja suggesting Brunhilde and Princess Consuela Bananahammock, and Katie saying she thought & or * (pronounced, of course, ‘Ampersand’ and ‘Asterisk’) would make lovely names.
Then my sister-in-law Dana commented that I should write a blog post about what names we’re considering, and ask you all to discuss and give your opinions of our names. Now, I’m not gonna do that, because I know myself well enough to know that I am Little Miss Contrary. If I told you all my absolute favorite name, a name I loved, and you all agreed that it was fabulous and the name we should use, I would probably say, “Eh, never mind. If everyone likes it so much we’d better pick another name.” I’m not saying it makes sense; I’m just saying I know that’s the way it would go.
But here is what I will do, because apparently there there are others out there, like me, who love discussing names. I can’t promise I’ll join the discussion in any serious way, and it’s very unlikely that anyone will know our kid’s name before she’s actually born. But hey, that doesn’t have to stop the fun! One caveat: don’t feel like you have to tell me THE name you’re saving for your kid, because the last thing I want to do is accidentally steal your name. That said…
What girl names do you like? Why?

This was my favorite name for a while, and would’ve been my first born daughters if I married someone else. I met a girl name Jessiah and she was the sweetest thing ever, now at the time I was dating a Josiah and we all him JJ but I thought it would really cute to pass his name down and I paired it with Avalon. So my dream girl name was Jessiah Avalon :) Feel free to use it or not.
Someone mentioned Madeline in her post, I really like that name and think it goes great with Annalie.
Today an announcement went out for a fellow employees new arrival. She named her daughter “Meadow Talia”. I had this immediate sense of peace about me upon reading that name. I have no idea why. I also know someone who’s daughter’s name is “True”. I somehow really like that too.
I really like the name Kate which I also think would go really nicely with Annalie so it would be Annalie & Kate.
I’m sure what ever name you decide for her will be gorgeous just like Annalie’s name!
YIPEE for sisters!!! I never had a sister and always wanted one. My first two are girls and I was so thrilled to find out the 2nd was going to be a girl because i am always in awe of the sister bond.
On to the good stuff: Sally, Lulu, Maeve, Quinn
I love the name Lily. My husband’s paternal grandmother is named Lily and she’s such a sweet, loving woman – I hope we one day have a daughter so that I can name her after her great grandmother. :o)
Ah, names! Hi Bethany, I have never commented before, but I’ve been reading your blog for about a year now! Anyway, I love making lists of names I like, and I have already picked out the first and middle names of all twelve of my hypothetical future children. But I refuse to divulge them for fear they will become popular. However, there are many other names I like! My nieces are Angelina and Alexia. I like classic names, too, such as Margaret, Kate, Sarah, etc. But I also like unusual names, that aren’t too far out. Just ones that are not common. Arielle would go well with Annalie.
If Nathan had been a girl, I would have liked Audrey or Abigail. Most likely Audrey since my sister’s dog is named abigail and that would have been weird. Like naming my kid after a dog.
delurking… Maria
Lauren, obviously ;) just kidding, my name of choice is Iris, the name of both my grandmothers x
I love the traditional sounding names… Annalie is such a lovely name something along those lines but not another “A” name… My girls are all vowels – Isabelle, Evelyn and Amelia… we went back in the family tree. Oh, and another consideration for them was the ability to be called more than one thing – I was always just “Carol” – no other versions available – like Jennifer could be Jen or Jenny… There’s my 2ยข – Whatever you pick it will be just what she should have always been named! :) Congratulations!!
De-lurking to play the name game.
My husband and I could only agree on a girl’s name and of course we had a boy. Here are some of the names I love right now:
Emery
Elise
Charlotte
Cate
Iona
Everly
Cordelia
Fable
Let’s hope you at least have a name by the time the baby comes, my son arrived 4 weeks early and didn’t have a name for 3 days ;o)

My family has this father/daughter tradition which I find endearing. You know how sons are ‘all important’ in the naming thing and girls kinda get left out? i.e no “Julie Junior” or “Julie III”?
My Dad’s side of the family names the first-born daughter the feminine version of the father’s name. My grandfather was Claude…his 1st born daughter is Claudia. My father was Don…his 1st born daughter is Donna.
@Kristy, my cousin named their daughters Talia and Katia…I’ve always liked those names and agree with you on the ‘feeling’ I got when I saw the name “Meadow Talia”. Kind of like a faerie! You know, there’s a page where you can convert your own name into a fairy name…. =)
I just saw Inception last night and the Ellen Page character was named Ariadne. I thought that was a great name–beautiful and unusual!
